Security checks on passengers' baggage have been tightened at Suvarnabhumi airport prior to the New Year festival in the wake of the attempt to blow up a US-bound airliner on Christmas Day.

The airport's deputy director for operations, Lt Narongchai Thanadchangsaeng, said extra checkpoints have been set up and out-bound passengers' belongings would be thoroughly checked.

The amount liquid items such as gel, spray and perfume carried by the passengers is strictly limited to 100 mililitres in line with practice at all international airports, he said.

For US-bound flights, passengers are subject to the strict transport security regulation of the United States. Before boarding an aircraft, their carry-on bags will again be checked by the airline, Lt Narongchai said.

People and vehicles entering or leaving Suvarnabhumi will also be checked. Drivers will be breathalysed.

Lt Narongchai said that during the New Year passengers should arrive at the airport at least three hours before scheduled departure times because they will have to go through extensive security checks.
